Momservation: An 80’s mixed tape can make (almost) everything better.
☺ ☺ ☺
So, we meet again, March—you heartbreaker, dream maker, love taker, don’t you mess around with me.
Obviously, we don’t need to rehash old wounds. Suffice it to say, there will be no mournful mixed tapes made in your memory to woefully sing along to what we once had. No “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” by Culture Club. No Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” No Phil Collins reminding us the illusion of our happiness together last year was “Against All Odds”—so take a look at me now, oh there’s just an empty space and you coming back to me is against the odds and that’s what I’ve got to face.
I hate you. I hate what you did to us. Didn’t We Almost Have it All? But no, you said Don’t Stand So Close to Me. You shut us down. You threatened to kill Grandma and Grandpa if I didn’t flatten the curve. You promised that we were on a break but instead we entered the highway to the Danger Zone.
Since then I’ve been Living on a Prayer, binging on Netflix and hoarding toilet paper, wondering Where Do Broken Hearts Go—we said we needed space but all we found was an empty place. And now I’m afraid. Afraid to go out, afraid of parties, concerts, hugging, afraid of sharing drinks and if I’ll ever be able to wear anything that doesn’t have an elastic waist band again. I’m at the Borderline—feels like I’m going to lose my mind.
And now here we are a year later, you have some nerve showing back up again. But you know what? Don’t Come Around Here No More—whatever you’re looking for, hey don’t come around here no more. I’ve given up, stop, on waiting any longer. I’ve got a date with Corona Vaccine. After two shots plus two weeks, I’ll be over you and ready to eat in restaurant again and touch a grocery cart handle without fear.
So nice try, March. I’m Still Standing—better than I ever did, looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid. I’m still standing after all this time, picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind.
Okay, well maybe just a little.
