The alarm goes off, I roll from bed<\/font><\/p>\n

Time to wake up those sleepy-heads.<\/font><\/p>\n

But first I look in the mirror and ask, “Are you ready?”<\/font><\/p>\n

I take a deep breath, try to keep the nerves steady.<\/font><\/p>\n

I promise today I will not be a fool<\/font><\/p>\n

I will calmly and expertly get those kids ready for school.<\/font><\/p>\n

But no sooner than said, it all comes undone<\/font><\/p>\n

Not a person got up, no daughter, no son.<\/font><\/p>\n

So the shouting begins: “Quick get dressed, no, not that shirt!<\/font><\/p>\n

Can’t you find one uncaked with dirt?<\/font><\/p>\n

No, I haven’t seen your other shoe<\/font><\/p>\n

You tell me now the field trip form is due?<\/font><\/p>\n

Cereal, waffle, peanut butter toast or oatmeal?<\/font><\/p>\n

Nothing’s not a choice, you won’t leave without a meal.<\/font><\/p>\n

Turn off the TV and eat already!”<\/font><\/p>\n

There goes the promise to keep the blood pressure steady.<\/font><\/p>\n

“You’re still not dressed, your hair’s a mess!<\/font><\/p>\n

It’s 40? out you may not wear a sundress!<\/font><\/p>\n

What do you want in your lunch today?<\/font><\/p>\n

Or rather, what would you like to trade or throw away?<\/font><\/p>\n

Have you brushed your teeth and brushed your hair?<\/font><\/p>\n

Please don’t tell me those are yesterday’s underwear.<\/font><\/p>\n

Quit your bickering, scooch over, make room<\/font><\/p>\n

More than one person can fit in this bathroom.<\/font><\/p>\n

Have you looked at the time? C’mon let’s hustle<\/font><\/p>\n

Why is it every morning you can’t move a muscle?<\/font><\/p>\n

Do you have your lunch, your homework too?<\/font><\/p>\n

Are you kidding me going out with that ‘do’?<\/font><\/p>\n

Go grab your sweater, you forgot your backpack<\/font><\/p>\n

Too bad, now we’re leaving with whatever you lack.<\/font><\/p>\n

No time to walk, scooter or bike<\/font><\/p>\n

Jump in the car it’s time to drive.”<\/font><\/p>\n

Hope there’s no cops, I’m not driving great<\/font><\/p>\n

But no kid of mine is gonna be late.<\/font><\/p>\n

I steal a quick kiss and a hug while I can<\/font><\/p>\n

Too soon they’re embarrassed by this and a minivan.<\/font><\/p>\n

“Good-bye! I love you! Have a nice day!”<\/font><\/p>\n

All is forgiven, I call out and wave.<\/font><\/p>\n

Ready to pull away, I shift my car into gear<\/font><\/p>\n

And slowly a smile spreads from ear to ear.<\/font><\/p>\n

Though the day may start off not as it should be<\/font><\/p>\n

I point my car home and the glorious silence waiting for me.<\/font><\/p>\n

One a.m. hour of chaos I am willing to pay<\/font><\/p>\n

Thank the Lord for education and the 7-hour school day.<\/font><\/p>\n
