{"id":31466,"date":"2020-02-26T11:38:13","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.momservations.com\/?p=31466"},"modified":"2020-02-26T11:38:13","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:38:13","slug":"designated-for-reassignment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2020\/02\/26\/designated-for-reassignment\/","title":{"rendered":"Designated for Reassignment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation: <\/strong>Seasons remind us that change brings something to look forward to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#x2665;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#x2665;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#x2665;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The house is awfully quiet today.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, now that I\u2019m a mostly work-from-home Empty Nester, a quiet house shouldn\u2019t be surprising anymore.<\/p>\n<p>But since I\u2019ve been going through 15+ years of my Momservations\u00ae parenting columns for my upcoming book<strong>, DON\u2019T FORGET YOUR LUNCH: A Diapers to Diploma Parenting Journey<\/strong>, you can imagine how haunting a quiet house can be.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong\u2014I\u2019ve been transitioning nicely to it just being me, Hubby and Darby dog now. As mentioned before, there are definitely perks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My time is my own, not dictated by my kids\u2019 needs.<\/li>\n<li>Regular Date Nights and going out with friends.<\/li>\n<li>A flexible calendar of fun things to do that are not planned around school activities, fundraisers, or my kids\u2019 sports\/extracurricular events.<\/li>\n<li>My dog never talks back, argues, ditches me for her friends, or wants money from me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026and my favorite:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My kids\u2019 problems are their problems now.*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Until they call home trying to make it my problem<\/p>\n<p>But as I sift through nearly 16 years of parenting tales causing me to both laugh out loud and tear up with nostalgia\u2026yeah, I miss my kids. I can\u2019t believe the heavy lifting of raising them is over. It still feels strange that I have been designated for reassignment.<\/p>\n<p>My job now is to just listen and support my young adult kids.<\/p>\n<p>After 20 years of actively parenting though, to suddenly be removed from duty feels like a proud little tugboat being sent to the scrap yard.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than wallow in the winter days of \u201cWhat do I do now?\u201d I think I\u2019ll head outside on this ridiculously warm February day and let the signs of spring have its way with me.<\/p>\n<p>As Darby dog and I walk by the Easter egg palette of tulips with the warmth of the sun on my face and the smell of spring blooms in the air I know a smile of contentedness will spread across my face.
