(Actually, we\u2019re not really pals, but doesn\u2019t everyone feel like they\u2019d be best buds with Paul Rudd given a chance meeting?)<\/p>\n<p>So my future best bud, Paul is in this Netflix Original Series, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80178724\"><em>Living With Yourself. <\/em><\/a>The premise being a depressed and dissatisfied character, Miles, undergoes a mysterious procedure that promises a better life. Instead, he is replaced by a clone who is a better version of himself.<\/p>\n<p>Which got me thinking\u2014if I could be a better version of myself, without being swapped with an inherently optimistic and naturally appealing clone, <strong>what would I need to do or change about myself?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paying attention to what made the cloned Miles so happy and likable I came up with: <strong>5 STEPS TO BEING A BETTER VERSION OF YOURSELF. <\/strong>And one of the great things is it\u2019s not just a formula for me\u2014I think it\u2019s universal to human happiness. Here\u2019s what I came up with and see if you agree:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Put your phone down. Be present. <\/strong>The true joys in this life don\u2019t come from artificial experiences. They come from real, live human interactions and earthly offerings. It\u2019s not puppy videos\u2014it\u2019s petting an actual dog. It not a text conversation\u2014it\u2019s making a connection with the person right next to you.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30985\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/cell-phone-obsession.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We may only go this way once, so use all your senses to relish in what\u2019s real about this human experience. <em>Smell <\/em>that newborn baby\u2019s head. Slip your hand in someone else\u2019s and <em>feel<\/em> the warmth and spark of connection<em>. Listen<\/em> to the birds singing the sound of a perfect note. <em>Taste<\/em> a perfectly ripened peach or warm chocolate chip cookie (calories be damned). <em>See<\/em> how saying something nice to someone automatically makes them smile.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t get these pure moments from a small computer in your hand. They slip away every moment you aren\u2019t present. And only God knows if you have one more instant to take advantage of all that is amazing in this world. Do you really want that gadget in your hand to be the last thing you experienced on this earth if it all changes in an instant? The better me wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30986\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/life-is-good.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/>2. Be positive. Avoid negativity. <\/strong>Being happy just feels better. That\u2019s why we try to find so many ways to be happy. Negative energy drains us and is heavy to carry around. To feel better you have to do better.<\/p>\n<p>Choose the optimistic path. Look for the light of hope. Surround yourself with positive energy. Avoid the low road lined with pessimism, negativity, hate, intolerance, ignorance and fear. It doesn\u2019t cost anything to be kind. It doesn\u2019t hurt to smile.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having a hard time finding positivity\u2014count your blessings or things you are grateful for. Any little thing. When you change your perspective to gratitude, happiness follows. If you put out positive energy, you get positive energy in return. Be someone you\u2019d love to hang out with. (Be Paul Rudd.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Do something for others. <\/strong>Being nice feels good. Being selfless is uplifting. Taking advantage of our human nature to want to connect with each other feels natural. Sharing our common humanity brings a surge of warmth. Realizing you have the ability to help someone else feels wonderful. (Why fight the feeling? Air Supply wouldn\u2019t.)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30984\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/helping-others.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have never felt closer to unlocking the meaning of life than in that surge of warmth you feel when you know you have helped someone else just because it instinctively felt like the right thing to do\u2014even when no one is looking. I think the best version of myself would reside in that space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Try new things. <\/strong>The world was meant to be consumed with wonder. Even with a lifetime, we can\u2019t get to it all. Children with their wide-eyed innocence have the best view.<\/p>\n<p>So see the world with the eyes of a child. Plunge forward with the exuberance of a puppy. Immerse yourself in life\u2019s offerings like a baby elephant in a mud puddle. Be inquisitive. Be brave. Be fearless. Be insatiable. Be open to possibility. The best version of yourself would make the most of your human experience. (Just in case in your next life you are a dung beetle.)<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30982\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/baby-elephant-in-mud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Let go of fear. <\/strong>Fear is the strongest\/tallest barrier to being our best selves. If you weren\u2019t afraid\u2014what would you do? So leap like you have a parachute. Sing like no one is listening. Dream like there\u2019s always tomorrow. Love like there is no heartache. Dare to surmount the odds.<\/p>\n<p>Collect firsts like <a href=\"http:\/\/www,usainbolt.com\">Usain Bolt<\/a>. Break boundaries like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ameliaearhart.com\/\">Amelia Earhart<\/a>. Break down barriers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/activist\/rosa-parks\">Rosa Parks<\/a>. Climb to new heights like<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_Hillary\"> Sir Edmund Hillary<\/a>. Release your inhibitions and embrace your possibilities. Don\u2019t be afraid to be you\u2014because everyone else is taken.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30983\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Mary-Oliver.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Mary Oliver asked: \u201cWhat will you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?\u201d I don\u2019t think my best self would waste it being scared.<\/p>\n<p>So thanks, Netflix, for the enlightenment. I\u2019m off to go be the better version of myself.
