{"id":18262,"date":"2017-07-26T14:44:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-26T21:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.momservations.com\/?p=18262"},"modified":"2017-07-26T14:44:57","modified_gmt":"2017-07-26T21:44:57","slug":"do-you-let-your-teen-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2017\/07\/26\/do-you-let-your-teen-uber\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Let Your Teen Uber?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation: <\/strong>If I wanted my kids to like me all the time, I wouldn\u2019t be their parent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18263 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Uber-640x434-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/>I\u2019m excited! Hubby and I are officially in the <strong>You\u2019re So Unfair! Everyone Else is Doing It Club!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know many of you have probably long been inducted into this club by your preteen or teen regarding Snap Chat accounts, going to parties with no parents, and riding in cars with a new driver before a year. But, amazingly, it took us until our kids were 16 and 17 to reach this level of contempt.<\/p>\n<p>And why are we such horrible, awful, unfair, out of touch parents? Because we won\u2019t let our kids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/\">Uber<\/a>\u2014specifically to parties and with no set plan for the evening.<\/p>\n<p>Call us old fashioned, but we\u2019re just not keen on paying a total stranger to drive off with our teenage daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Trust me, during more than a few standoffs we\u2019ve heard all benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/\">Uber <\/a>and how everyone else has no problem letting their kids play Driving Miss Daisy with Mommy and Daddy\u2019s credit card.<\/p>\n<p>But before we take this to the Court of Public Opinion, let\u2019s review some of the arguments that have been debated in the Wheeler house:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to Uber because we can\u2019t drive past 11 p.m. for the first year of our license.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counter argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly you care about what\u2019s legal after driving your friend around all day on a provisional license?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>True Translation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m planning on breaking curfew and don\u2019t want to get a ticket also while I\u2019m at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all want to go to the party together and not have to drive by ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counter Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t all park and walk into the party together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>True Translation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody wants to drive to the party because there might be a few vodka Gatorades going around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18265 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/teens-uber.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a ride there but we don\u2019t have a ride home and we don\u2019t want to wake you to come and get us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counter Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas this ever stopped you before as your personal chauffer for the last 16 years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>True Translation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want any parents to pick us up because then they\u2019ll know we\u2019ve been drinking or smoking pot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not sure of what we\u2019re doing yet but I do know the group I want to go with is Ubering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counter Argument:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds like you need to make a plan and find a different group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>True Translation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to tell you our real plan because we know you\u2019ll say no and Ubering is the best way to get away with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the deal: I\u2019m not knocking anyone\u2019s parenting if you let your kids use your Uber account or set one up for them. Everyone has their reasons. I know for some of my friends, they\u2019re trying to be realistic about the pressures of underage drinking. Don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell, just take Uber and get home safe. Some are tired of being chauffeurs or they don\u2019t have enough cars for all the drivers, or because of the expense of car ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, like accepting social media as the modern form of communication for teens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/\">Uber<\/a> is a modern convenience for getting around.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m just not there yet. My kids have cars. We even pay for their gas and insurance. So why am I going to pay someone else to drive you around when you have this privilege?<\/p>\n<p>I know, we\u2019re just so unfair.<\/p>\n<p>#ShouldTeensUber\u00a0\u00a0 #TakeAStand\u00a0 #LetItGo<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To Uber or not to Uber?
