{"id":14365,"date":"2016-09-13T12:49:32","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T19:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.momservations.com\/?p=14365"},"modified":"2016-09-13T12:49:32","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T19:49:32","slug":"too-precious-to-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2016\/09\/13\/too-precious-to-fail\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Precious to Fail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation<\/strong>: \u201cWhat defines us is how well we rise after we fall.\u201d Zig Zigler<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14366\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Failure-quote.jpg\" alt=\"failure-quote\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>I am terrible at the trust-fall team building exercise.<\/p>\n<p>If you want me to trust you don\u2019t take a bite of my Ben &amp; Jerry\u2019s when I ask you to hold it for a second. No one has to fall. No one has to tragically over-estimate their ability to catch my lied-about weight. And no one has to be embarrassed because they Hershey-squirted out of shock when their \u201cfriends\u201d chose a good laugh over your trust issues and let you hit the floor.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no surprise that I have a hard time letting my kids fall. Fall as in fail. Fail as in know disappointment, experience rejection, suffer pain, give in to anger, miss an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Do I know these are growth opportunities? Yes. Did I experience all these challenges in life and survive, even thrive because of them? Most definitely. Am I trying to nurture the best possible people to send out into the world? Hell, yeah.<\/p>\n<p>And yet I can\u2019t stop myself from throwing my body under theirs at the slightest hint of failure from my children.<\/p>\n<p>They have become too precious to me to fail.<\/p>\n<p>I know I\u2019m not doing my kids any god-damn favors because of my own personal demons that want to shelter my babies from life\u2019s inevitable pain, suffering, and hardships. I can see I\u2019m depriving them of necessary growth, experience, and opportunities to learn how to weather life\u2019s storms and become resilient.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, like a hoarder, I just can\u2019t stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Well, guess what? Now that my teenagers are closing in on adulthood it\u2019s time. I\u2019m doing my own personal intervention and I\u2019m going to do the trust fall.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14367\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/failure3-quote.jpg\" alt=\"failure3-quote\" width=\"195\" height=\"258\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because there\u2019s a critical difference between guiding your kids and doing it for them. I want problem solvers not impotent thinkers.<\/li>\n<li>Because disappointments are a part of life and I don\u2019t want whiners who always complain that everything\u2019s unfair.<\/li>\n<li>Because rejection and pain are the battle wounds of the strong and the capable.<\/li>\n<li>Because watching a missed opportunity makes you hungry to do and be better.<\/li>\n<li>Because we aren\u2019t getting out of this life alive. I want kids who use this time to seize the moment no matter how daunting, not spend it running from fears and uncertainty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My promising 17 year-old son may not play baseball in college because he thinks he can just rely on natural ability.<\/p>\n<p>My scary-smart 15 year-old daughter may run herself into the ground pushing herself too hard with too little sleep and poor nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>But these are lessons they need to learn. It is painful for me to watch them fall. But by letting them do it in the safety of a loving, supportive home I will trust that they will be okay.
