Never thought a bat would be the biggest competition for my son’s love…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Momservation:<\/strong> It\u2019s inevitable and healthy for a mother to be replaced as the best girl in her son\u2019s heart. But the successor better be f**king fantastic.<\/p>\n

\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n

I had some stiff competition this last Mother\u2019s Day for the homage and affection of my 16 year-old son.<\/p>\n

No, it wasn\u2019t about splitting time with his girlfriend on Sunday (it\u2019s a new relationship\u2014feeling confident I still have her solidly beat).<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t about getting in some guy time with his buddies Sunday (I\u2019m still batting .500 when going up against his beloved posse).<\/p>\n

I guess you could say the challenge for my son\u2019s reverence and love didn\u2019t necessarily come out of left field\u2026but it does help him get it into left field.<\/p>\n

Let me explain:<\/p>\n

I knew for my son\u2019s English assignment he needed to write 20 poems. This was like asking Donald Trump to be humble\u2014sheer torture. So as Logan took practice swings with his baseball bat in between racking his brain for lurches of anemic prose, I tried to be both helpful and fish for a great Mother\u2019s Day gift by saying, \u201cYou know you could kill two birds with one stone by writing a poem for your mother that you could give her on Mother\u2019s Day\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, when he was putting together his poem book, I saw Logan had indeed written me a poem titled, \u201cTe Amo Mama (Mother\u2019s Day Poem).\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t wait to receive it!<\/p>\n

But when I opened my Mother\u2019s Day card from my son, there was no poem in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s my poem?\u201d I asked disappointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh. You want me to go print it up right now?\u201d he said clueless that that\u2019s what you should do with a Mother\u2019s Day poem for your mother.<\/p>\n

In the middle of dessert, cards, and gifts I gave him a quicker solution. \u201cI saw a copy of it in the recycle pile from your Table of Contents mess up. Why don\u2019t you just grab that one?\u201d I was dying to see what eloquence my only son had to say about his mother!<\/p>\n

Retrieving the misprinted copy Logan said, \u201cIt\u2019s also got a part of the poem I wrote about my bat, if that\u2019s ok\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Teasing my baseball-loving son I said, \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want it then. You probably wrote a more heartfelt poem about your bat than your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without missing a beat and with a mischievous smirk on his face he said, \u201cWell\u2026it is a good bat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though he did title the poem about his bat \u201cBeautiful Bat\u201d and there was no reference to my unmatched beauty in his poem for me, I claimed victory over the challenge for Logan\u2019s affection because he ended my poem with \u201cI love you\u201d and there was no mention of love for his bat.<\/p>\n

His girlfriend better be worried though, because he did say it was \u201cthe bat of his dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
