{"id":14048,"date":"2016-02-09T13:13:39","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T21:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.momservations.com\/?p=14048"},"modified":"2016-02-09T13:13:39","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T21:13:39","slug":"sore-losers-suck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2016\/02\/09\/sore-losers-suck\/","title":{"rendered":"Sore Losers Suck"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Momservation:\u00a0<\/strong>If you want to be a good role model to my kid, then lose like you enjoyed it for a change.<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/sports\/football\/cam-newton-super-bowl-media-walkout-sore-loser-article-1.2525436\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14050\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14050\" src=\"https:\/\/momservations.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Cam-Newton-Sore-Loser.jpg\" alt=\"Cam Newton Sore Loser\" width=\"635\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a>Reading time: 3 minutes (or just longer than Cam Newton\u2019s postgame Super Bowl 50 interview)<\/h4>\n<h4>I really want to like the guy. I really do. But <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cam_Newton\">Cam Newton<\/a> just isn\u2019t doing himself any favors.<\/h4>\n<h4>I like how he learned from early college mistakes at Florida and resurrected himself into a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at Auburn. It models what I try to teach my kids:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>We\u2019re all going to make mistakes, but if you learn from them to do better and be better next time it\u2019s not a mistake at all.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>I like how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.panthers.com\/team\/roster\/cam-newton\/a9ff8c76-7a6a-4e1a-9e9a-b72aff45deb4\/\">Cam Newton<\/a> obviously works hard and is a team player. You don\u2019t become the only player in the modern era to be awarded the Heisman Trophy, win a national championship, and become the first overall pick in an NFL draft within a one-year span as well become NFL Rookie of the Year, a 3-time Pro Bowler, named to the NFL All Pro First Team in 2015 and be the 2016 NFL MVP without hard work, dedication and sacrifice. A great role model for these family philosophies:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Anything worth doing is rarely easy, but if you leave nothing on the table you\u2019ll have no regrets. <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><em>If you give your best you can achieve the best.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>I like being witness to Cam\u2019s amazing feats of athleticism. It\u2019s fun to watch someone who is so good at what they do. Which is great example of this belief:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>To give anything less than your best is to waste your gifts.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Your talent is God\u2019s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>I love that<a href=\"http:\/\/mmqb.si.com\/mmqb\/2015\/12\/23\/cam-newton-sunday-giveaway-football-kids-touchdown-nfl-carolina-panthers\"> Cam Newton<\/a> has started a Carolina Panthers tradition of handing over touchdown footballs to little kids in the stands. Why hoard these as trophies when you can share the wealth? This is where I think Cam shines the most as a role model:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Don\u2019t underestimate the power of simple acts of kindness.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><em>No one gets anywhere without help from someone else. Pay it forward.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Now here\u2019s what I don\u2019t like about <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.masslive.com\/patriots\/2016\/02\/cam_newton_love_hate_column.html\">Cam Newton<\/a> that is keeping him from being the sports hero and role model that he has the potential to be:<\/h4>\n<h4>He needs to elevate his character to match his impressively growing stats sheet. All the preening and game-stopping showmanship is in poor taste. The true greats of the game (*cough* Peyton Manning *cough*) don\u2019t toot their own horn. It is not what we should be teaching our young athletes who look to emulate the pros. This is:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Be humble in your achievements. <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Let your actions speak louder than your words. <\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><em>Work hard in silence. Let your success be your noise.<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.panthers.com\/team\/roster\/cam-newton\/a9ff8c76-7a6a-4e1a-9e9a-b72aff45deb4\/\">Cam Newton<\/a>, now five years into an<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/\"> NFL <\/a>career and 26 years old, needs to grow up. You can\u2019t blame mistakes on youth and inexperience anymore. So when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/sports\/football\/cam-newton-super-bowl-media-walkout-sore-loser-article-1.2525436\">admitted sore loser<\/a> has a petulant showing more suited for a five year-old than a pro athlete at the postgame interview for Super Bowl 50, there is no excuse. When a hooded, scowling, terse, and unprofessional Newton abruptly left his short interview with the press a sample headline read: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nfl\/story\/carolina-panthers-cam-newton-s-postgame-press-conference-was-as-bad-as-his-super-bowl-020716\">Carolina Panthers Quarterback Prematurely Walks off Podium<\/a>. It should have said, <em>Immaturely Walks off Podium<\/em>.<\/h4>\n<h4>The worst part for me in my quest to want to like and root for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cam_Newton\">Cam Newton<\/a> to do well in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/\">NFL<\/a>? Hearing my 16 year-old son and aspiring college athlete say he thought there was nothing wrong with Cam Newton\u2019s postgame behavior. He thought the star quarterback\u2019s behavior was justified because a good athlete should be upset when they lose.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u201cHe was mad they lost. What\u2019s wrong with being upset when you lose?\u201d<\/h4>\n<h4>Nothing. But there\u2019s a classy way to show it. A mature way to show it. A good sportsmanship way to handle it. A good role model way to show how it\u2019s done.<\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2615085-peyton-manning-comments-on-cam-newton-after-super-bowl-50-win-vs-panthers\">Cam Newton<\/a> lost an opportunity to elevate himself with the true sports greats by modeling this for all the young athletes who aspire to take a page out of his successful book:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><em>It\u2019s easy to be a good winner.
