You left at eighteen<\/h4>\n

The call of duty always your song<\/h4>\n

No one believed in you<\/h4>\n

You were going to prove them wrong<\/h4>\n

And became a Navy sailor<\/h4>\n

A man for his country<\/h4>\n

Whose first duty was honor and valor<\/h4>\n

You saw your first Gulf War<\/h4>\n

On the USS Carl Vinson at age twenty-three<\/h4>\n

Your family so relieved<\/h4>\n

With a swift victory<\/h4>\n

But your house was a ship<\/h4>\n

Stationed on coasts far from home<\/h4>\n

We stayed connected by letters<\/h4>\n

And holidays over telephone<\/h4>\n

You rose through the ranks<\/h4>\n

Serving your country your trade<\/h4>\n

Not often you could visit<\/h4>\n

Two weeks the longest you stayed<\/h4>\n

You became a hero<\/h4>\n

When stationed at Guantanamo Bay<\/h4>\n

A crashed burning plane<\/h4>\n

You saved two souls that day<\/h4>\n

On far flung shores<\/h4>\n

You grew your own family<\/h4>\n

It wrenched our hearts to miss it<\/h4>\n

But just glad you were happy<\/h4>\n

Another Gulf War broke out<\/h4>\n

More family fear of the danger<\/h4>\n

You promised you were safe<\/h4>\n

But it made you a stranger<\/h4>\n

You missed holidays and birthdays<\/h4>\n

You missed funerals and weddings<\/h4>\n

But how proud you made us<\/h4>\n

We were never forgetting<\/h4>\n

In serving your country<\/h4>\n

Time had become a thief<\/h4>\n

Suddenly our drifting boy<\/h4>\n

Had become a dashing Navy Chief<\/h4>\n

Dangerous covert operations<\/h4>\n

Took you to Iraq and Afghanistan<\/h4>\n

You saw more tragedy and loss<\/h4>\n

Than should be seen by any man<\/h4>\n

The fallout was great<\/h4>\n

Your service and dedication came at cost<\/h4>\n

Kids growing up without their father<\/h4>\n

Eventually a marriage lost<\/h4>\n

But no one can say<\/h4>\n

You didn\u2019t give it all<\/h4>\n

A veteran of three wars<\/h4>\n

Only the best heed that call<\/h4>\n

As we honor our military<\/h4>\n

On this Veteran\u2019s Day<\/h4>\n

You are among our country\u2019s elite<\/h4>\n

And for the lost we pray<\/h4>\n

No matter the sacrifice<\/h4>\n

No matter how far you did roam<\/h4>\n

All that matters my brother<\/h4>\n

Is that you came home.<\/h4>\n
