\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n

I think this generation of youth should be dubbed \u201cThe Trawling Generation.\u201d Seriously. In the history of time there has never been such a mass rush of youth eager to take up the profession of fishing.<\/p>\n

Fishing for compliments, that is.<\/p>\n

And their new-age tool of the trade?<\/p>\n

Selfies.<\/p>\n

Yep, incessantly trawling from their social media vessels: Instagram<\/a>, SnapChat<\/a>, and Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cast into the right crowd and you\u2019ll get the compliments you\u2019re fishing for:<\/p>\n

OMG! Why are you so beautiful?!<\/i><\/p>\n

I hate you! You are perfection! <\/i><\/p>\n

Hecka urb!<\/i><\/p>\n

Rate: 10<\/i><\/p>\n

This is too cute!<\/i><\/p>\n

TBH: You\u2019re cool<\/i><\/p>\n

So jealous! Why can\u2019t I be like you?<\/i><\/p>\n

Hecka tight bro!<\/i><\/p>\n

Heady stuff\u2014instantaneous feedback everyone telling you how wonderful you are\u2014I get that.<\/p>\n

But fling your net too far\u2014to followers and \u201cfriends\u201d you don\u2019t know, those hiding behind anonymity, those who derive their attention from being cruel and crass, or the uncontrollable tide of going viral-\u2013and all it takes is one insensitive or profane remark to cut the line of validation. Reeling in instead: shattered ego and devastation.<\/p>\n

Sure, on the periphery selfies seem harmless and just another teen trend that will go the way of bellbottoms, big hair, grunge, and skinny jeans. (Or maybe not since \u201cselfie\u201d was just added to the Oxford dictionary<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Not so harmless though when kids take selfies to a dangerous level like they currently are on Twitter under #Selfie Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a mother I find the selfie trend disturbing. Here I am trying to raise self-assured teenagers, whom I hope will then blossom into trail-blazing young adults, eventually becoming substantive adults\u2014can this be the outcome from a youth society that can\u2019t seem to function without constant validation?<\/p>\n

A positive self-image should come from within instead of needing to be artificially generated and sustained.<\/p>\n

So sure, as the current captains of our children\u2019s ships we could go the route of setting limits like the 5 Rules for Taking #Selfies on Instagram.<\/a> (Favorite line: Essentially, ask yourself, “What would Kim Kardashian do?” Then do the opposite.<\/i>)<\/i><\/p>\n

But I\u2019d like to take it one step further:<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s pull in the nets kids. Reel it in. Dock the social media ship and take a little shore leave from habitually checking status updates for some instantaneous validation.<\/p>\n

You want to feel good about yourself? Try getting your \u201cLikes\u201d from the one person who really matters: You.<\/p>\n
