{"id":12293,"date":"2013-09-24T12:02:59","date_gmt":"2013-09-24T19:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/?p=12293"},"modified":"2013-09-24T12:02:59","modified_gmt":"2013-09-24T19:02:59","slug":"lethal-weapon-in-our-childrens-hands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2013\/09\/24\/lethal-weapon-in-our-childrens-hands\/","title":{"rendered":"Lethal Weapon in Our Children&#8217;s Hands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Momservation:<\/b> If you wouldn\u2019t have the courage to say what you\u2019re about to post to someone\u2019s face, then that should be a clue not to do it.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n<p>I have a love\/hate relationship with many things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My Body Pump class on Thursdays that makes me hurt for a straight hour but then afterward makes me feel like I can conquer the world with my Buns of Steel.<\/li>\n<li>Ranch dressing, Oreos, Ben and Jerry\u2019s Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream\u2026love them all but hate that it makes me have to go to Body Pump.<\/li>\n<li>My smart phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I love that my iPhone keeps me connected to my kids so I don\u2019t have to worry. I love that I\u2019ll never be lost again with my map app (unless I were to use Google Maps, which I don\u2019t). I love that no one can ever stump me with a question with my instant access to Google.<\/p>\n<p>I hate that my phone has me addicted to every kind of bubble, gem and jewel game. I hate that if I have a second of down time I mindlessly reach for my phone. I hate that I can\u2019t resist constantly checking in to my social apps.<\/p>\n<p>But mainly, I hate what smart phones have done to society.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12294\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/198.23.108.118\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/iphone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12294\" alt=\"Just as dangerous as a car or a gun\" src=\"http:\/\/198.23.108.118\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/iphone.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just as dangerous as a car or a gun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I believe they\u2019ve become lethal weapons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Distracted drivers and their smart phones rule the roads and are raising body counts every year.<\/li>\n<li>Kids are using their phones to cyber bully others to the point of suicide at an alarming rate.<\/li>\n<li>People \u201cconnecting\u201d more through social media facilitated by phones rather than true interpersonal connections are creating a society that thinks nothing of attacking each other through \u201canonymous\u201d or insensitive postings without the consequence of facing the pain they\u2019ve inflicted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Though both my teenagers have iPhones, I\u2019m doing everything I can to keep these electronic devices from turning into lethal weapons in their hands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m laying the groundwork now before they get their driver\u2019s licenses that distracted driving will be zero tolerance.<\/li>\n<li>I work on modeling responsible smart phone behavior by keeping my phone in my purse while I drive.<\/li>\n<li>We put our phones away when we have the opportunity to socialize in person.<\/li>\n<li>I monitor their social media and electronic communications.<\/li>\n<li>They aren\u2019t allowed to be on sites like ask.fm where people are allowed to hide behind anonymity and have a tendency to be cruel and incite drama.<\/li>\n<li>They are discouraged from spending too much time on sites like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter that fuel teenage anxiety and insecurity by basing their self-worth on \u201cLikes\u201d and \u201cFollowers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>SnapChat is a privilege based on trust and maturity and can be revoked at any time.<\/li>\n<li>Phones are to be used for good and not evil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I know I can model, teach, and enforce responsible smart phone usage and my kids can still be \u201ctaken out\u201d by the idiots that are inevitably around us.
