Momservation: <\/strong>Out of the mouths of babes is a short trip from out of the mouth of a parent.<\/p>\n

\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n

I live in a community (by choice) where people don\u2019t ask if it\u2019s a boy or a girl, but rather if their baby looks like it\u2019ll go to Stanford or Harvard.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a community where people put their babies on preschool waiting lists in utero (you think I\u2019m kidding \u2013 I\u2019m not).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a community where if you ask if anyone\u2019s ever eaten at the Golden Corral<\/a> they will want to know if you have to be a member first of what they assume to be a premier equestrian complex.<\/p>\n

For the most part I like it here. Good schools, good people with good intentions, good community support and involvement.<\/p>\n

But then you have those few parents who ruin it for the rest of us \u2013 those of us trying to raise grounded kids in a privileged environment.<\/p>\n

You know the ones:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where the Tooth Fairy leaves $20 and your kid has to ask why their teeth are only worth a dollar.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Their kids are decked out in so many name brands you think they were Nascar racers and your kids want to know why they\u2019re not sponsored by Abercrombie<\/a>, American Eagle<\/a>, and Nike<\/a>.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Their kindergarteners have iTouches<\/a> and their 3rd<\/sup> graders have iPhones<\/a> and your kid wants to know how come they don\u2019t have a screen name.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Allow their middle schoolers to have Facebook<\/a> and Twitter <\/a>accounts and your kid wants to know why they aren\u2019t allowed to have any \u201cfriends\u201d and \u201cfollowers.\u201d<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who demand their child be moved to a higher achieving class causing a mass exodus of followers only to have all the same kids in essentially the same class.<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who buy their kid a new car before they even have their Learner\u2019s Permit and your kid wants to know if Back to School shopping always includes picking out the color of your new Lexus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

[youtube=http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_isgXzxIa24]These are the parents you want to pull aside and whisper, \u201cYou do know that this isn\u2019t Talladega Nights<\/a>, you aren\u2019t Ricky Bobby, and the saying, \u2018If you ain’t first you’re last\u2019 is supposed to be a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Life isn\u2019t a sprint cup race. It\u2019s not about what you can do for your children to put them ahead, but what they can do for themselves with their own ambition, at their own pace.<\/p>\n

As much as I love my neighbors and friends who live in my community, it can be exhausting living here, doing damage control all the time, trying to reassure your children that living a life of running at your own pace doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re falling behind at being successful in life.<\/p>\n

As long as they believe in themselves, try their best, and can feel good about how they achieve their goals, they\u2019ll get there when they get there.<\/p>\n

Then they can slap their friends Walker and Texas Ranger on the back and say, \u201cSo, what did you end up doing with all that Tooth Fairy money you saved up?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
