{"id":11568,"date":"2011-11-29T13:43:38","date_gmt":"2011-11-29T21:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/?p=11568"},"modified":"2011-11-29T13:43:38","modified_gmt":"2011-11-29T21:43:38","slug":"the-more-they-change-the-more-it-stays-the-same","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2011\/11\/29\/the-more-they-change-the-more-it-stays-the-same\/","title":{"rendered":"The More They Change, The More it Stays the Same"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation: <\/strong>If you\u2019re waiting around for parenting to get easier, you\u2019re going to be waiting a long time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passing through the Salt Lake City airport on our way back home from our Montana Thanksgiving vacation, Hubby and I saw a flashback of ourselves a decade earlier.<\/p>\n<p>It was a frazzled and weary looking couple trudging to their next gate, the man with a backpack on his back (no doubt filled with airplane distractions), a toddler in one arm and car seat in the other; the woman pushing a collapsible stroller with an infant in an infant carrier with all sorts of baby and toddler paraphernalia swinging from it.<\/p>\n<p>As we passed them with sympathetic smiles Hubby asked, \u201cHow far apart are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty months,\u201d the man said sounding like 20 months ago he should have stayed on the couch watching <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/video\/sportscenter\">SportsCenter<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11569\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/dsc_0080.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11569\" title=\"DSC_0080\" src=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/dsc_0080.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It wasn&#039;t always smiles having kids 17 months apart<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hubby and I glanced at each other with a knowing smirk. We had them beat. We nearly always have them beat. Nodding with his head toward our 10 and just turned 12 year-olds walking up ahead carrying their own luggage he said with camaraderie to the couple, \u201cOurs are 17 months apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man nodded his head in recognition of our mutual membership in the had-our-kids-ridiculously-close-together-club before looking at our loosely supervised kids with disbelief that one day that would ever be his experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gets easier,\u201d Hubby assured him. But then to not paint an unrealistic picture and show the battle stripes earned he added, \u201cBut there was a lot of crying in the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was my cue. \u201cMost of it was by me,\u201d I said toward the woman who looked about to cry. Then I reassured her, \u201cYou\u2019re in the hard part, but it goes by so quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While one couple was thinking <em>too quickly, <\/em>another was thinking <em>not quick enough.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11570\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/scan3_0003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11570\" title=\"Scan3_0003\" src=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/scan3_0003.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The early days of my membership in the Had-Our-Kids-Ridiculously-Close-Together-Club<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As we caught up to our kids who had stopped to wait for us at the gate without being told we wished the couple good luck and encouragement to hang in there. Giving them a glimpse of their future Hubby said, \u201cThey\u2019re like twins by this age. They entertain and play with each other really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smiling at our son and daughter who were getting the cards out in anticipation of a family Rummy tournament as we waited for our flight I added, \u201cThey\u2019re a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watching the couple struggle forward with hopeful smiles, I knew there was so much more I would\u2019ve liked to tell them.<\/p>\n<p>That it doesn\u2019t necessarily get easier, just different. That each stage comes with its own set of challenges. That one day you\u2019re worrying about ear infections and diaper rash and before you know it you\u2019re worrying about first crushes and broken hearts. And that all too soon we\u2019ll be staying up late hoping they get home safely, that they\u2019ll find someone who will love them as much as we do, and that they\u2019ll want us in their lives when they have lives of their own.<\/p>\n<p>Dang it \u2013 see now I\u2019m crying again over my kids!
