{"id":11512,"date":"2011-10-04T12:53:28","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T19:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/?p=11512"},"modified":"2011-10-04T12:53:28","modified_gmt":"2011-10-04T19:53:28","slug":"a-satisfying-tale-of-i-told-you-so","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2011\/10\/04\/a-satisfying-tale-of-i-told-you-so\/","title":{"rendered":"A Satisfying Tale of &#8220;I Told You So&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation: <\/strong>A kid would rather learn it the hard way than admit their mother might know a thing or two.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago in<a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/30\/i-can-get-my-kid-to-do-anything-for-a\/\"> I Can Get My Kid to Do ANYTHING For\u2026 <\/a>I told you how my daughter, Whitney, was working toward becoming a model of responsibility so she could have a turtle.<\/p>\n<p>Well, she did it. Thirty consecutive days of brushing her hair and teeth without being told, keeping her room cleaned, and her things picked up around the house without being nagged. I didn\u2019t think my little forgetful Sally could pull it off, but she was focused on the goal. In fact, she was doing so well, I was encouraging turtle ownership for my son hoping he\u2019d get his act together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11513\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11513\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11513\" title=\"IMG_0246\" src=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0246.jpg?w=224\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Homer the Hamster, soon to be free to a good home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Originally, Whitney had wanted a hamster. I told her they were too stinky. She tried to argue with me that they weren\u2019t, how did I know anyway? and that she promised she\u2019d keep the cage clean so it wouldn\u2019t stink.<\/p>\n<p>When I still said no, she then went through every pocket pet she\u2019d seen at the pet store until we settled on what we thought would be the easiest and least stinky. The turtle. We then negotiated terms of turtle ownership, having to prove she was responsible enough to care for her own animal.<\/p>\n<p>The day came when we went to get her turtle from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petsmart.com\">PetSmart<\/a>. Whitney could not contain her glee, \u201cI\u2019m gonna get a turtle, I\u2019m gonna get a turtle,\u201d she sang the whole way.<\/p>\n<p>We did not leave with a turtle.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out we didn\u2019t do our homework very well. I thought we would be getting a $20 turtle in a 5 gallon tank and maybe picking up a head of lettuce at the store on the way home.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, no. The turtle was actually a tortoise that would grow three times its size and live to be 50 years old. It was $99. And the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petsmart.com\">PetSmart<\/a> employee made it sound like she would report me to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peta.org\"> PETA<\/a> if we didn\u2019t buy the optimal habitat of a 40 gallon tank with provisions for two climates.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Whitney and said, \u201cHow about a hamster, honey?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve now had Homer the Hamster for two weeks. We\u2019ve considered renaming him Stinky Pete or Gross Disgusting Pig That Pees in His Wheel and Eats His Own Poo. We had to go buy an air freshener for Whit\u2019s room. She\u2019s just about done with him and his continuous filth. She says she\u2019s giving him one more chance, but if he pees in his wheel then runs in it again she\u2019s putting him up for adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone want a hamster?
