{"id":11497,"date":"2011-09-20T13:05:07","date_gmt":"2011-09-20T20:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/?p=11497"},"modified":"2011-09-20T13:05:07","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T20:05:07","slug":"me-and-my-best-friend-stress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/momservations.com\/index.php\/2011\/09\/20\/me-and-my-best-friend-stress\/","title":{"rendered":"Me and My Best Friend Stress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Momservation: <\/strong>As a working mom you might as well make friends with stress because it\u2019s your constant companion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">\u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u263a<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11500\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/summer-11-069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11500\" title=\"Summer '11 069\" src=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/summer-11-069.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planning and executing this party, not so stressful...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If I\u2019ve got to blame something then I blame the month of July.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always joked that our jam-packed summers were so hectic that it actually made us ill (<a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/07\/so-much-fun-its-sick\/\">So Much Fun it\u2019s Sick<\/a>) or threated to run us into the ground (<a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/05\/fun-tired\/\">Fun Tired<\/a>). But when the doctor who recently diagnosed my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/graves-disease\/DS00181\">Graves Disease<\/a> asked me if I\u2019d experienced any stressful events lately, once I was done openly laughing in his face, I said, \u201cDefine stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPurchase or sale of a house, death in the family, unplanned events?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotherhood?\u201d I offered up, surprised it wasn\u2019t on the top of the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I suppose it can be. Are you working as well?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mother isn\u2019t working?\u201d I countered a bit testy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUm, right. But has there been a recent experience that may have been particularly stressful? Most auto-immune diseases can be traced back to a precipitating event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Where did this guy want to start? \u201cWell, first there was trying to push a baby the size of a watermelon out of a place a fraction of the size\u2026lots of crying, pooping, peeing, feeding, changing over and over and over again with very little sleep\u2026trying to potty train two kids under two\u2026keeping your toddler from destroying everything in its wake\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor interupts, \u201cYou said your children were 10 and 11 now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was actually thinking within the last six months,\u201d he says as if the stress of the first 11 years doesn\u2019t count.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking for a moment I offer up July. \u201cWell, there was my son\u2019s All-Star baseball season\u2026and my daughter going to sleep-away camp for the first time and it was unusually cold and she didn\u2019t pack any warm clothes and she wasn\u2019t feeling well\u2026my husband\u2019s annual birthday party for over 100 people I organized during 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July weekend\u2026 a daily blog, a weekly blog, a monthly blog and column plus three freelance assignments with short deadlines all due while my kids were off for the summer giving me no time to write during daylight hours\u2026trying to remember to feed my friend\u2019s cat while they were gone in Europe for three weeks and who suddenly decided to go AWOL\u2026soccer summer camp, basketball summer camp and soccer practices and tournaments to get my kids to\u2026packing, shopping, organizing for a trip to Shaver Lake and then Donner Lake\u2026trying to keep secret a surprise visit to the Bay Area for my sister-in-law\u2019s birthday\u2026my extended family from Monterey staying with us for a weekend rafting trip\u2026the dog got kennel cough\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor interupts again, \u201cSo you\u2019d say it was a stressful month for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thinking again I say, \u201cNo, not really. Just the usual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor decides to move on when I yell, \u201cI got it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stops what he saying and waits expectantly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11501\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11501\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/plate_of_food-7332541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11501\" title=\"plate_of_food-7332541\" src=\"http:\/\/momservations.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/09\/plate_of_food-7332541.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planning and executing this...stressful!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTrying to figure out what the heck to make for dinner every night and making sure you\u2019ve got the groceries for it, it hits all the major food groups and that everyone will eat it.
