My son just started junior high this week. I have volunteered in my kids\u2019 classrooms since kindergarten. So I was planning to keep on truckin\u2019 and see where my services could be used at the middle school level.<\/p>\n

Before I could ask for a sign-up sheet the school counselor informed an entire multi-purpose room of helicopter parents: working in the classroom \u2013 so not cool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Before we could go buy a new lunch box for this year we were told by a veteran middle schooler: lunch boxes? So not cool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Apparently, everyone\u2019s having hot and smashed food in brown bags in 6th<\/sup>, 7th<\/sup> and 8th<\/sup> grade. Obviously, so much cooler.<\/p>\n

When my friends went to drop their daughter off on the first day of junior high there was a waving, cheering contingent of student leaders welcoming new students.<\/p>\n

Getting ready to wave and honk back their daughter hissed, \u201cDon\u2019t even do it! That\u2019s so not cool<\/strong>!\u201d<\/p>\n

Welcome to the junior high years parents. Be prepared to walk through a minefield of so not cool<\/strong>. Suddenly the rules have changed and what once was normal and okay has instantly become so not cool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
